Dj Narrative

I explore and fuse Narrative with Djing and Electronic Music Productions. I also play Handpan, live on a narrowboat, and enjoy creating Audio & Visual Narrative work.

I freely share all the content i make via my monthly newsletter, and seek to connect with others  interested in any of the elements of the DJ Narrative project, as listeners or creators.

I have been developing this idea since my 1st performance as a Dj with other artforms at Project X Presents, which has created a much wider vision for the project over and above an artist alias. It has also produced a host of techniques and content around Narrative, Djing, Electronic Music Performance, & Visuals, which I work & collab to develop, and has created two courses which I hope will help enable or inspire others to explore their own narratives.

Ultimately i spend the time because i love to explore and create narrative based content, and learning from all the feedback, and 250 gigs, confidently feel that it is of a real level of quality to start actively sharing with people who love Dj mixtapes and electronic music culture. The mission is to create content that stays in the car, creating mixtapes which share great music, and learning to create narratives & performances that help to share or explore insight.

If you want to support me or this project, just subscribe for free with your email so I can send the new content. Nothing in return, just that simple connection, which i value & seek to honour by developing the best work I can.

About

Rarely do you find a DJ who is searching to bring something new to the artform. Dj Narrative manages to fuse insightful narratives with seriously impressive dj sets. His mixtapes and performances span a huge range of genres, but all with a distinct overall sound, and 2017 see's a much more evolved sound and style.

With a deep passion for evolving the art-form and an instinctive ability to rock the floor, Marc has totally embraced the digital DJing movement, developing his scratching and controllerism techniques in order to transcend limitations and enable creative expression.

Coined as the “DJ with no barriers who fuses genres seamlessly” and a winner of the Night Times award for best dj, his creativity in djing has seen Marc perform with string quartets, dancers, performance artists, musicians, percussionists & vjs, as well as supporting a long list of big names, with a wide range of residencies.

He also produces electronic music, plays handpan, and has pioneered new Dj approaches of Traktor Stems released through Loop Lounge, with support by Native Instruments, describing it as "Incredible routine demonstrating the power of #stems"

His routines also grabbed the attention of Dj Mag in 2016 who described them as "closing the gap between live production and DJing" plus recent releases on a range of labels like Beta Birmingham & The Roots Project.... Show / Hide More

Ably showing what can be done with a little creative flair just using samples alone, closing the gap between live production and DJing."

- Dj Mag 2016

"Marc is highly creative individual whose passion shows in his work. He has a great work ethic and on every occasion has risen to the challenge I have send his way. loop Lounge is proud to have Marc as our producer."

- Guillaume Rousere (Loop Lounge)

""Well this is just blowing my head wiiiide open. Innovative beyond belief. Prime brain fodder from certified JEDI - Dj Narrative - What a trip! Thank you!!

- Freaar (Slamboree)

Akin to Brad and Dom, Marc's sets are inventive, genre hopping adventures. One of the most skillful DJ'S with the most interesting sounds around - you won't stop dancing!"

- Jibbering (Shambhala)

"Incredible routine demonstrating the power of #stems by @DjNarrative for @LoopLoungeLtd"

- Native Instruments (2016)

"Akin to Brad and Dom (The Nextmen), Marc's sets are inventive, genre hopping adventures. One of the most skillful DJ'S with the most interesting sounds around - you won't stop dancing!"

- Jibbering (Shambala Festival)

"Working on projects such as Slamboree, Marc Reck is one of the most versatile and explosive DJs on the scene. We are very excited to have him back to The Hare and Hounds, after he has been away working on his latest master piece - The DJ Narrative.... Expect the unexpected....."

- Tom Hyland (Electric Swing Circus)

The Underground Narratology Broadcast

Underground Narratology is my monthly broadcast which features a mixtape with Narrative from the Coming Home Collection, and a Dancefloor mixtape from the Going Out Collection. There are now 30 mixtapes available for free download, and I wanted to start something to bring a focus to this format ive been developing.

I use samples, music and acapellas coupled with a spectrum of dj techniques, sample performance & storytelling / writing techniques to try and create a compelling narrative. I've found that sample culture, electronic music & digital media has pretty much an unlimited possibility with expressing or ideas in different juxta positions, and i've been researching and developing the idea since the first performances with vjs, performers, musicians & dancers at our 1st project x presents event.

I've loved listening to and making mix tapes for friends & lovers for as long as i can remember, and got hooked on mixing electronic music in the mid 90's after finding the essential mix, john peel, and my weekly pilgrimage to the que club. I guess this is my own 'take' on the essential mix format, but my sole aim is to make mixes that stay in the car. I don't know why it's so important to me, but i love music, and i love narrative, and have a n ever expanding vision for the project / idea, which is currently fuelled by feedback & passion, but with ideas of collaborative income streams to support the bigger ideas.

Ultimately i have found the combination of sample & vocal performance, with a well curated and performed music library, (and now visuals), incorporated with various narrative and storytelling techniques can provide a very unique but incredibly expressive platform, and while i will always love and continue the dj mix side, I'm hoping that by getting more active with promoting the project content, sharing  and finding & connecting with others interested in the idea, that it will in some way add another depth to our the artform of djing & electronic music performance.

I am working on a collaborative project for artists and non-artists, and i also have two courses sketched out to share all of the research and development i've been noted down, so aside from downloading and (i hope) enjoying the mixtapes, i will be inviting subscribers to be a part of the bigger ideas of the project as have recently developed a very easy access format that works with the performance techniques of the narrative elements when it recommences in the Autumn.

Latest Episode (October 2017)

Here is the latest episode of the new broadcast. I send it out once a month via a newsletter & freely subscribing enables all downloads.

More of the new Undergound Narratology episodes will live on  The Broadcast Collection 2017

More Narrative Mixtapes

Most of the Narrative mixes use a dont fall into a specific sound very well, as they use genres, samples and acapellas to convey the narrative. They are normally contained in the Coming Home series of the Underground Narratology Broadcast, and Backstory, although i've developed a way of performing it on the dancefloor side.

Influences

Djs like Coldcut, James Zabiela, & a couple of the early Northern Exposure mixes, but all genres, great djs, electronic music producers and all of the sample and vocal content. Storytellers, Joseph Campbell, Project X Presents, endless influences.

Genres

All genres featured in the Coming Home Collection's

Experience

Years of developing the idea behind the scenes on the stage. Collaborations with Dancers, Musicians, Visual Artists, Vjs, Performers and storytellers, and exploring all kinds of approaches and technologies have led me where it's at. Feels a good time to try and connect with others around the idea.

Broadcasting in 4D

My mixtapes & performances loosely fall in 4 styles. Dancefloor (Tech / Warehouse), Dancefloor (Bass), Dope & Downtempo.

I've done my best attempt at grouping the main styles into the 4 main areas to try and help navigation for visitors & promoters find what they want to hear, recognising the importance of defining genres both as a promoter of 15 years, and a music lover. It also helps me navigate my music library and dj a much wider sound, without having to choose from everything.

If you do find for any reason yourself looking for anything in particular on my makeshift site, i'm always at the end of an email 🙂

Accessible Funky - Going Out Vol #2, Going Out Vol #6 Pt 2

Music : Downtempo, Glitch Hop, Breaks

Narrative  : A tale of a dj who starts to lose her connection with the tao with her increasing dependance on technology

The final track had an accompanying video made by modal, which comments on the disposability of childhood imagination in the technology age. This is something which underpinned the narrative, & helped me fill in the gaps from You're Original by Leftfield through to Lucky by Albert, which were my start and end points.

Mixtape Feedback

"Incredible journey, seamless mixing, superb mix mate...fair play" Matthew Foord - on Dj Narrative The Dj & The Tao Mix

"Fuckin Awesome Mix Man!! Thanks for posting this! - Breaks Fiend on Fear & Love Mix 2006

“It really is a piece of work Marc.. a journey of contrasting styles and musical vigour that’s perfectly mixed, brilliantly chosen and superbly thought out. The ppl I did play it to, once I got home, agreed – they’ve been privvy so far to a completely different ‘Marc Reck’ and this, as it did me, hit them by storm. But, what a journey, all tied in at the end by that amazing Sigur Ross track which brings the whole ‘music’ experience to a huge close and leaves you somewhat in awe. I listened to it with Jack as we drove thru all weathers down the M54. It isn’t that it “just” makes good driving music, even though the double edge thing was that while physically travelling on one journey I was listening simultaneously to another journey. Jack leant forward at one point and turned up the bass and said “God yes, this is it this is” (to get a reaction out of him is pretty amazing and thats the first time I’ve seen him actually moved by what he was hearing). After that, I must’ve listened to it another 5 times during the course of the weekend.. in all sorts of different states. Its pretty much had the same affect on everyone.. so it can’t be just me reading things into it. Everytime I finished listening to it, someone came into the house asking to play it again. Even Valentino Canziani has never been played in my living room that much and consecutively too. Surly that speaks volumes about its quality. …Your best work yet mate ;)” - Sarah Wilkinson (Graphic Designer/Positive News) on Fear & Love Mix 2006

An idyllic outro, if not somewhat ironic, as it was clear that no one was yet ready to become bed bound. The rare pleasure of an encore at the end of the night is a true testament to the success of the celebration, and we will certainly be asking for more where that came from - Dominik Kai Brotherton (journalist)

Music Productions

I've had a few releases on labels like Beta Birmingham, and the roots project (with Bwiti Initiation just released at the end of August 2017), and created a couple of free ep's, an album of remixes, and around 50 soundtracks for small community arts films.

I've also created Traktor remix sets for loop lounge, a new scenes format for Traktor stems, and some sample collections. I enjoy all parts of the music production process, and have been developing some newer techniques for working with samples and narrative content in electronic music productions.

I play the handpan (learnt with a panstream and now play a halo), and i practice some spanish guitar and piano, djembe and bongo alongside my scratching and finger drumming, and electronic production setup.

From 2017 i'm working on a totally different sound and style which is inspired by artists like Djrum, Leftfield, Pedestrian, and the deeper sound of Tipper, Amon Tobin and Jon Hopkins. Many others, but i'm aiming for something that sits between the more cinematic, broken beat, & techno, with elements of dub, house, & bass music.

Currently im working on a downtempo remix for a Australian based pianist Rich Batsford, and dancefloor techno track for Birmingham Techno label XE:Techno, and 2 remixes for leamington musicians. So still keeping the two genres of Coming Home and Going Out.

I'm alsoputting in a funding application with a visual collaborator  to develop an audio visual show, and a framework for narrative collaboration. With some support from some long time inspirations, we have a really strong application, but with the state of funding and the fact its our first time applying we shall see.

All the new stuff will sound really different i'm anticipating, but here are a few examples of some earlier tracks, plus a video Keith Sharman made, and the forthcoming release on The Roots Project

Current Release - Roots Project Records (Aug 2017)

The Roots project invited me to create a track for their debut compilation which is out next month, aiming to raise money for permaculture projects in indigenous communities. The first release focuses on the Bwiti tradition which is a spiritual discipline of the forest-dwelling Babongo and Mitsogo peoples of Gabon.

My track is based around one of those recordings of the tribe (african guitar and vocal line) and a mix of electronic productions, field recordings and playing hand drums like african djembe and spanish bongo with african kalimba with a narrative idea from watching an inspiring documentary about Gabon.

The documentary about Gabon is from one of the producers of 1 giant leap (who i think might be also on the album) > vimeo.com/98326702 < and there is more about the roots project on their facebook page -  www.facebook.com/therootsprojectpage/

My stuff is on  www.djnarrative.com and the album will be out via their page.

Roots Project Records

Roots Project Records (RPR) is a branch of The Roots Project, We serve as bridge, connecting the music from indigenous, ancestral, healing traditions to the wider world through remix projects. We work directly with indigenous peoples and ethical organisations who benefit the wider community and help to protect and regenerate land. Our selection of contributing artists produce complimentary, organic, deep and dubby remixes of sacred ceremonial, healing songs and we help to manage marketing and sales.

We ensure that the equity from each remix project are distributed to:
the original artists and their families.
the organisation who is working with the wider community and land/social protection/regeneration projects.

***The Roots Project and RPR is a transparent, non-profit, direct trade organisation. All of the incomings and outgoings are open source and will be available on our website  www.therootsproject.com for feedback and improvement. The equity split percentage and artist and project info will be included with each release.***

For our first project, we have the honour to work with the B’witi tradition in Gabon. For many thousands of years the Pygmy have utilised a sacred wood called Iboga as part of their healing and initiation ceremonies within their communities in Central Western Africa. The ceremonies last for days, and are traditionally divided into two sections, ‘death' and ‘rebirth'. Throughout the deaths of various identities, the participants confront their shadows whilst the piercing, glitchy sounds of a large mouth harp called the Mogongo is played. As the patient's transition to the Rebirth, heaven opens up to the hypnotic harp of the Pygmy called the Ngombi.

The Organisation in Gabon we’re working with is called Blessings of the Forest  wwww.blessingsoftheforest.org which has been set up to preserve, research and share knowledge about the medicinal plants and indigenous traditions of the Gabonese forest people for the benefit of all of humanity.

Acid Gloop Portals - Made from Stems Scenes Collection (2016)

A Track from a 6 track ep with each track made using only Traktor S8 & D2 parts from my first Loop Lounge STEMS SCENE SERIES Collection - House, Breaks, and Bass Music Progressions.

In the collection, I created and produced 128 Drum, Bass, Lead & Harmony STEMS SCENE parts. A new format and approach to using Native Instruments Stems format, and and wanted to see if i could make an arrangement of each Scene into a full track using the Traktor S8 & 2 D2’s, & a bit of post production and diy mastering in Ableton.

The Stems Scenes collection is available from Loop Lounge and available in 3 different versions (including one free) alongside a video routine, and tutorial, previews and other artist collections - www.thisislooplounge.com/collections/stems/products/house-breaks-bass-music-progression

1st Ep of Early Narrative Remix Attempts (2014)

4 tracks that i originally intended as practice for my Reckorder project but which i've ended up finishing in June 2014 to create parts, loops and samples for a new remix set project i've been invited onto from loop lounge.

The ozomatli remix was released on December 20th 2013 as part of a 12 track EP of remixes and bootlegs from an array of Brum beatsmiths called Champagne Socialism, which is available for free at @beta-birmingham & @beta-test-records. And the rest i've spend a couple of weeks producing inspired by the invitation from loop lounge, all of which makes up my first collection which will be available from Loop Lounge from October 2014.

They've turned out ok considering they were intended as practice tracks and thought id upload them for some backstory as i work on the new sound

1st Album of Early Narrative Remix Attempts (2012)

My first attempts at producing electronic music cobbled together into an album of remixes from back in 2012. The production and arrangment aren't very developed, but i think the loose narrative threads come through, and it reflects the different styles of breaks related genres i used to play.

Handpan Player & Storytelling

So one of the main instruments im learning is the handpan. We learnt on a panstream, and at the start of 2017 had the opportunity for a new 3rd gen Halo.

I work with an exceptional storyteller Pyn Stockman creating the soundtrack to the performances and we've performed in Leamington and Birmingham, since our debut gig in March 2017 at the Stagey Fox. with bookings at the Custard Factory, the Big Slue, & Birchwood Jazz festival. We also collaborate on many projects on the community arts side, focused on creating and inspiring narrative using various digitial and community artforms. Feel free to get in touch with us for more information or to discuss any related bookings

I plan to incorporate the handpan into my own electronic productions, and record jams and post the audio up for other producers to download.

Here is my 1st recording and audio download with each new one being sent to all free newsletter subscribers

Dj Tools & Routines

I produce collections for Loop Lounge, to provide royalty free Sample Library and Traktor remix set and Stems collections.

In 2015 i created our first collection which was a set of 4 remix sets and recorded our 1st routine with it, working with no fuss productions.

Later that year we recorded our 2nd video routine using other artists remix sets on the label, which got the attention of Native Instruments, who asked us to record a 3rd video using their new format stems. which i had already been working on.

And at the start of 2016 we launched a new format i'd been developing, which was named STEMS - Scene Series, and created a couple of tutorials and a routine for the label.

I created the samples / parts for the 1st and 3rd videos and for the 2nd all samples were created by the loop lounge producers Emile, Simon Owen.

For the videos i edited the 1st & 2nd, and No Fuss Productions, edited the 3rd, and did all the filming and final colourising for all 3.

You can view the routine videos and Stems Scenes Series overview video on the right and check out the links below to check out any of the packs.

Photography

I like taking and processing photographs. I have a dslr with a decent lense now, but most are just quick shots from the phone (galaxy S5).

Posted a few on facebook and some people left some nice comments so learnt a bit of post production for some of the more interesting ones.

Thought they might be more interesting with some quotes on them,  and trying not to take too long with them, though have only done 9 at the time of writing.

I have used some in recent community arts films, and want to use them in Narrative visual mixes, but other than that i'm thinking they might just be nice to have a flick through when listening to a mix.

Uploaded the microphone one to a getty images and its been bought 8 times in last few months, so thinking it might be possible to sell them as prints or collections of images in some format, and they might make nice gifts if presented well.

For now i was thinking of putting them together in a collection for subscribers to download. Quotes and asthetics make nice screensavers. Any interest or feedback as to ideas of how to use the ever growing library of scenic based imagery is always welcome 🙂

Visual Narrative

I've been lucky to have the opportunity to work with some amazing visual artists over the years, Blend, The Lab, Blendstate, Mash, Chromatouch, No Fuss Productions, and a few of them have remained great friends who have shown me a thing or two on the visual front, which has inspired me to try and create my own visual narratives.
I've always had an interest in the visual side, and learnt how to use most of the main adob stuff via all manner of videos, flyers, covers and animations for various projects and events and suchlike.

Vjing though i've always wanted to incorporate with my narrative mixes. I think the nature of how they work, i.e not being really obvious and literal with samples and ideas, means that a similar visual aspect works perfectly. Finding people with enough time to do this has proved really tricky, and so, aside from putting in our first funding bid to do that on a much bigger scale, i'm going to start recording my own visual mixes, in the hope that they will get seen, make sense, and generate opportunities in some form or another.

I've been working a fair bit when i get time on that side and have designed a template using VDMX, (after learning it obviously), and also created a system of creating, collecting and managing footage. This has always been the difficult bit, and i'm right at the start with it, but i think it works. I have loads of footage that i want to use, and have collected free packs from some of my favourites producers like Beeple. I hope to put out my own packs with the footage i shoot too, but first up just recording a basic narrative based vj mix to the latest Coming Home mix once a month would make me happy.
Another reason for doing this is to get across the ideas in the mix, and the idea as a whole to more people. I think the collaboration of Dj and Vj with both working on a narrative mix to perform that means something to them would be something id like to see.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my website.

If you want to contact me for any reason, either as a listener, fellow dj, or if you want to book me for a gig drop me a message via this little contact form here. I normally respond within 24 hours, so if you haven't had a reply feel free to email direct at djnarrative at gmail dot com.

I'd also very much like to connect with other people that either enjoy listening to, or are attempting to create, mixtapes with narrative.  The response has been really positive to the backstory mixtapes, and it's not apparent where people exist, so i’d like to start making any efforts i can to connect with anyone who is interested from either sides, as a fellow listener or as interested creator. I have a forum and various ideas but taking 1st steps from October 2017.

Either way i hope you enjoy the content created, shared or curated and thank you again for taking the time. It makes it all worthwhile.
